Chapter 6, Verse 5

"Lift your self with the Self.
Do not sink into the selfish;
For the self can be the friend of the Self,
And it can be its foe also."

Rabi'a al-Adawiyya:

Let me hide in You
From everything
That distracts me from You,
And from everything
That comes in my way
When I want to run to You.

May God steal from you all that steals you from him.

[The "Self" and "God" mean so many things to so many people: pure consciousness itself, impersonal and immutable; the personal connotation, an immanent quality exemplified by enlightened beings; Buddha nature, intuition, so many ways to approach that ineffable something which is ultimately experienced in the right brain function, below the threshhold of discursive thought.

This is not meant to put down discursive thinking, which definitely has its place, but rather to show its limits.  There's the example of using a thorn to remove another thorn from the skin.  The thorn is removed, you sit quietly and the natural healing qualities of the body take over (grace).  The finger becomes whole again.

It takes two to tango.  We have to do our share, or the higher power, with infinite patience, will wait.]
